We are all very much aware of the ongoing pandemic that we are caught up in. With quarantine periods and self-isolation pings from out NHS apps, it can get quite boring sitting inside with nothing to do. I have created a list of the 5 most exciting things to do whilst you are isolating! I have included ideas that will fit everyone so make sure you give it a read. From gardening to free online games to starting a blog!
Start learning how to read music.
If you are lucky enough to already own an instrument or be able to read/play music, then props to you – you may want to move onto the next activity. If music is not your strong point, then why not start from the beginning and give it a go. Reading music is a real skill that not everyone can do. Get up some YouTube videos and start learning. Why not invest in a cheap keyboard and start learning some songs? Then when you come out of isolation you will be able to impress everyone with your newfound skills!
Here is one of the YouTube videos I started with:
Play online games at Plays.org
I have recently been loving this new gaming site and wanted to share it! It is called Plays.org, there are so many different games to choose from and they are always coming out with new ones. This is what I found great when it comes to having to self-isolate. There will always been a game you haven’t played yet!
What’s even better is that all of the games are free!
When you find a game you like it comes up with a quick overview. One of my favourite games is Frogtastic. It is so addictive and so easy to learn how to play it:
If you love a game you are able to add it to your favourites so you can always find it. Alternatively, if you love the game, but want a change, you can go to the related games section to see similar games. There are hundreds of games on this site so you will never run out:
There are also reviews if you wanted to check these out beforehand. They cover the design of the game, how fun it is, its originality and its replayability:
The website is laid out so clearly and offers instructions for each game. There are also no ads on this site which is what can get slightly annoying on other gaming sites. So this is a massive bonus!
This is by far the best free online gaming site I have encountered. I have been finding games to play online ever since I can remember! At school we used to go to the computer rooms at lunchtime and search the web for the best gaming sites. So being able to use Plays.org for free in self-isolation is amazing!
If you are unsure or cannot pick a game then there is a button where you can pick a ‘random play’ and it gives you a random game. This is how I found Frogtastic!
Start a blog
So, this is a little bit out there but something I fully recommend. I started a blog in lockdown when the whole country was isolating, and it was one of the best things I did! I recently wrote a post about 10 Vital First Month Blogging Tasks for Success. So if you want to start your own blog this post will point you in the right direction.
You can either choose to monetise your blog or simply keep it as a hobby. I started my blog last year in April 2020 and I have already been able to monetise my blog with affiliate marketing and sponsored posts.
There is a massive blogging community over on Twitter that you can get invloved in. Everyone helpeds everyone out and it is such a psotive place! Blogging can be an outlet, your own little space where you get to write about whatever you want. You can get to write knowing that people are reading and enjoying your posts!
Redecorate your bedroom
It’s time for a change!
We all either know someone or are someone who is wanting to change to their bedroom. I have certainly been that person who wants to change their room. In fact, I have recently changed up the décor in my room. Fortunately, I am going to show you a few cheap and quick fixes that you can utilise to change up your bedroom.
First change
Picking your colours. A bedroom is a place where you spend a lot of your time albeit the majority of the time you spend in there may be spent sleeping but hey, you still want it to be a pleasant place don’t you?
My first piece of advice is to pick the right colours. My personal favourite is to stick with soft and neutral colours like greys, beiges and whites. However, there is nothing wrong with a bit of colour in your life! The beauty of using neutral colours is that you can match almost any colour with them. For example, I chose white and grey as the base colour for my room then I paired them two with duck egg blue.
As I have mentioned the beauty of using neutral colours as your base colour on the walls and furniture is that you can pair any colour with them. Therefore, when wanting to add a splash of colour, it doesn’t cost you much! The only thing you need to do to add a bit colour is add a few coloured cushions on your bed or even add a coloured rug. This is great because who doesn’t like to save a few pennies here and there!
Second change
Be strategic when you are placing objects on furniture like cabinets, tables, desks or even the walls! Remember the more clutter you have, the smaller the room looks. I stick to a rule of no more than 3 objects on a surface. This can encourage the room to feel more spacious and more importantly, tidy! The same goes for putting pictures and mirrors up on the wall. Placing too many on the walls can close the room up, however mirrors if placed well can make a room look bigger. Remember thought the mirror needs to be proportionate to the room.
The same goes for lighting, if you have a bedside table, a lamp should always go on that, the same goes for a desk. A cost saving trick with lamps is to either get lamps that are simple and neutral colours or if you are one that likes to change their lamps, take a little trip to a large discount store such as B&M! I certainly got my lamps from here and I don’t regret it one bit.
Now for your main ceiling light, again I would recommend getting a simple light where you can change the lamp shade. This will allow you to compliment your colours each time you decide to change your room! Alternatively, if you would rather stick to one ceiling light, this is where you can go a bit extravagant and get a real showstopper of a light! There are plenty of fancy lights out there that are waiting to be plugged in!
Third change
Your furnishings such as cushions and rugs. If you chose to use a neutral base colour, this is where you can spice it up a bit. A rug should always be proportionate to the room. An idea is to ensure that some of the rug is underneath some furniture, this is known to add a more luxurious feel to your room. For example, my bed sits in the middle of the room and the rug is underneath a1/3 of the bed and the rest of the rug is untouched. This certainly made my room feel swankier!
Cushions on your bed is must in my eyes and you can never have too many! Well maybe you can, but let’s talk about picking the right cushions. If you have a double bed you should always maintain symmetry with your cushions. What you do on one side, should be done to the other. Be careful when picking your cushions too. Although we love to save a penny, cushions on your bed should stand sturdy and maintain their shape. I made this mistake when buying new cushions and ultimately, I ended up buying new ones because they ripped.
Again, with your cushions you add colour to the room. Be careful to ensure that they match your bedding though! Bedding, how could I forget! Bedding can correlate with your base colour or join in with all the fun by implementing patterns and colours. I prefer to have white bedding just because I think it adds a smarter look to the room, and of course, it means I don’t have to change it each time!
Fourth change
Finally, your furniture such as bed side tables and shelving. Pick furniture that will either fit in with all room types or furniture that is easy to paint. I know that I spent my lockdown painting my furniture. This totally transformed the room and saved me money too! Nevertheless I would recommend picking furniture that is pretty timeless. Not only does it cost to change your furniture but it is also a pain to move!
Do some gardening
Gardening is something that people pass over a lot. If seems like too much effort. It can also be weather dependent. But if it is the right time of year then get some gloves on and order some seeds. You can start by planting flowers and then move onto growing your own vegetables. Tomatoes are a great thing to start with if you wanted to go down this route. Gardening can be very therapeutic and can help you release stress so it is well worth giving it a go if you have the time. You may even enjoy it and it might become your new hobby!
Spend some time doing your research and see what you can plant at certain times of the year. Here is a gardening calendar to give you a head start on your research:
