Opening up your living space can create a great sense of comfort from a greater area and more light. But you may also want to divide an open plan room for privacy and dedicated functions.
Install a Floor to Ceiling Divider
One of the more stylish options you can use is a floor-to-ceiling divider. Typically, these are made from wood, concrete or plastic. And they essentially act as an informal wall. These are excellent for hiding stairways, separating living and kitchen spaces, and as a hallway guide. Even better, though, you can use these for placing unique features in your home, such as a 3 sided glass electric fire, hanging up your favourite artwork or creating another source of light.
Carefully Place a Large Sculpture
Placing a full-size divider is a great way to zone an area. But it can be imposing, especially in a smaller space. A great alternative is to carefully place a large piece of art like a sculpture. This gives you the unique opportunity to show off something you love while giving it another purpose. Additionally, a sculpture will allow more natural light to flow through your space than a standard divider block. And you can admire it every time you come home and see it as you enter.
Divide an Open Plan Room with Curtains
You probably decided on an open-plan space to make better use of light. So it might not make sense to block it out. Otherwise, what’s the point? Updating your home to open plan, however, causes some privacy concerns. So a curtain makes great sense as a compromise between the two. A ceiling-mounted curtain allows you to pull it across for times when you need to separate two areas, need privacy or to block out intense sunlight. And, it’s one of the cheaper options.
Hang Up a Ceiling Divider
Want to beat gravity at its own game? Then you can’t go wrong with a ceiling divider. Unlike a curtain, ceiling dividers are fixed into place. But they offer a unique alternative and can be a dazzling display in their own right. For example, you can hang beaded dividers, chains or soft fabrics depending on the overall decor style your open space has. Additionally, they are easy to put up and take down. So you can easily swap them out depending on the current season.
Separate Rooms by Flooring Type
Finally, you may want to go for a less obvious approach when dividing your open space. You can do this using different flooring in each area. For example, you can section off the carpet where it meets the hardwood of the kitchen for obvious reasons. Or you can even colour-code the space you have and divide the room that way. Flooring-type divisions work really well when you want to maximise natural light. And it works for commercial offices just as well as at home.
Summary
You may want to divide your open-plan room to create different sections or functional areas. To do this, you can use ceiling dividers, hanging curtains or sectioning off zones by floor type.
